Spiritual Context of Cape Breton
Since the year 2000 over 40 churches have closed down here on Cape Breton Island. This has left many people living within the CBRM (Cape Breton Regional Municipality) without a Christian witness in their local community.
While Christians in a community without a church, will actively seek out a church to belong to outside of where they live, those who don't believe are left without a Christian witness within their local community.
Over the years this will result in large areas of the CBRM being untouched by the Gospel, resulting in a spiritual wasteland within large areas of Cape Breton.
A Shrinking Foundation
Now for a population of around 95,000 - 98,000 people living in the CBRM, we would expect to see around 100 - 120 churches as a basic foundation to effectively reach out to this level of population density.
This number of churches is the basic provision needed to reach out to around 15% of the population who show some interest in God. Based on these statistics we would expect to see around 147 people in each of those 120 churches.
Currently the CBRM has around 22 evangelical churches and many of them are 100 people or less. This puts the Christian community at least 75 churches below even a basic provision to reach out to 15% of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.
By having a vision to just maintain the churches that we already have on the island, we are presiding over the slow decline and collapse of Christianity on Cape Breton Island.
